Didn't get a good description of the service my Topdon Topscan Pro provided

It's a great tool but I mistakenly thought that you only needed the update if you used it on a newer car but no you need the "update" if you plan to use the device at all except for scanning for codes. I use mine for my currently owned vehicles and I may not use it that often but it appears I have to pay $99 to be able to use it. I would not have bought it if I had known.

Second time around

This is my second TopScan Pro. The first unit had all of the functionality I needed and more. The yearly update cost is equivalent to the cost of the tool, so I decided to purchase new rather than update. I'm not a frequent user, so the cost per use is $25-35 for me. The tool is easy to lose if you don't pay careful attention, so a lanyard attachment would be a great feature. YMMV.

Easy to set up and does what I need

Easy to set up, instructions are clear, phone app is intuitive. Connection to the phone was simple, and the app set up and initialization went without problems. I use it strictly for reading codes, and it can read a lot of static and live data. I am particularly interested in the oil pressure, and I can read it while driving. It is cheapest among scanners sophisticated enough to read live data that I needed.
